One of the most powerful yet often overlooked aspects of the Lord’s Prayer is how Jesus teaches us to approach God. Before we ask for anything, Jesus establishes relationship, authority, and identity.
“Our Father who art in heaven…” (Matthew 6:9)
This opening line is not poetic—it is foundational. It sets the spiritual posture for prayer and reveals how believers are meant to relate to God personally, corporately, and as families.
God Is “Father” — Relationship Before Requests
Jesus intentionally uses the word Father, not Master, Judge, or Distant Deity. This immediately establishes intimacy, belonging, and identity.
Scripture affirms this truth:
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!”
(1 John 3:1)
Prayer begins not from fear, performance, or striving—but from sonship and daughterhood. When believers understand God as Father, prayer becomes relational rather than transactional.
For families and parents, this is vital. Children who learn to approach God as Father develop:

Why “Our” Father Matters
Jesus does not say “My Father” or “Your Father”—He says “Our Father.”

Jesus then directs our attention upward:
“…who art in heaven.”
This phrase establishes God’s position and authority.
The Bible tells us:
“The heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth He has given to mankind.”
(Psalm 115:16)
“Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool.”
(Isaiah 66:1)
God reigns from heaven as King, while humanity is entrusted with stewardship on earth. Prayer begins when we acknowledge who God is and where He reigns.
This helps families shift from:
- Control → surrender
- Anxiety → trust
- Fear → confidence in God’s rule
How This Positions Our Families for God’s Presence
When we pray “Our Father,” we are not only acknowledging personal faith we are placing our families under God’s Fatherhood.
Scripture says:
“I bow my knees to the Father… from whom the whole family in heaven and on earth is named.” (Ephesians 3:14–15)
Recognizing God as Father over our homes invites His manifold presence. His wisdom, peace, protection, and guidance into our daily lives.
Homes that honor God as Father experience:
